Creative specialised translations: our people make us famous <\/strong>while tackling the most interesting assignments<\/strong>!<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

We\u2019ve been providing\u202fspecialised translations<\/strong>\u202ffor almost 13 years, and the jobs we assign to our translators cover a wide range of subjects. We take pride in our people, value their loyalty, and appreciate their commitment to even the most unusual translation projects.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Mihai has been collaborating with\u202fSwiss Solutions<\/strong><\/a>\u202ffor 3 years. This week, we invited him to tell us about a difficult but exciting translation job he had to complete.\u202fEach translation has its own challenges: terminology, cultural matters, the deadline, the importance of finding the right resources, and so on.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

But we were quite surprised when he sent us the story we are sharing below.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Romanians and cursing<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

I had always been aware of the Romanians’ creativity when it c<\/em>omes<\/em> to cursing: from the <\/em>ever-popular<\/em> \u201c<\/em>m\u0103<\/em>-ta\u201d (your mother) to combinations with other <\/em>relatives<\/em>, holiday names<\/em>,<\/em> and all sorts of intimate activities involving real or imaginary objects that I won’t mention here. What I found out <\/em>from<\/em> a translation job I received from<\/em>Swiss Solutions<\/em><\/strong> is that French, English and other languages also have insults and <\/em>profanity <\/em>that are quite complex and similar in terms of inventiveness and creativity to those we find in Romanian. The job I<\/em>\u2019<\/em>m referring to<\/em>,<\/em> involved<\/em> a <\/em>list<\/em> of slang words and expressions that should be forbidden in text messages during the 2016 European Football Championship.<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The list was prepared by an important mobile phone service provider who needed<\/em>specialised translations:<\/em><\/strong> French slang terms to be translated into English, Romanian and other languages. The purpose was <\/em>to make sure <\/em>the messages sent during the championship contain<\/em>ed no<\/em> profanity <\/em>or<\/em> insults directed to players, national football teams, referees<\/em>,<\/em> etc., since such messages were to be displayed on a screen near the Eiffel Tower during the games and between the first and second halves.<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The obscene words <\/em><\/strong>i<\/em><\/strong>n that list would have (probably) made other translators reject the job<\/em><\/strong>,<\/em><\/strong> but I accepted it since I was intrigued and <\/em><\/strong>eager <\/em><\/strong>to start (somebody had to do it).<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Al<\/em>though many people <\/em>are <\/em>embarrassed <\/em>by <\/em>curs<\/em>ing<\/em>, we have to admit <\/em>it\u2019s<\/em> part of the Romanian language and its vast vocabular<\/em>y<\/em> and <\/em>should be accepted <\/em>as such.<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Working on<\/em>specialised translations<\/em><\/strong>\u202falways requires one’s <\/em>full effort<\/em>. My mission for this job was to find equivalent Romanian terms for the French terms <\/em>i<\/em>n the list. <\/em>Of course, i<\/em>t was a challenge, because I also had to consider the cultural and political background (for instance, names of presidents or<\/em> current<\/em> \u201cstars\u201d), along with names of characters who got a lot of exposure on Romanian television at the time.<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

An important <\/em>aid <\/em>for this translation <\/em>project <\/em>was a French-Romanian Dictionary <\/em>of Slang <\/em>by <\/em>Ioan<\/em> Matei<\/em>, which<\/em> I had bought during my university years<\/em>. B<\/em>ack then, I would use it to impress my Romanian and foreign university <\/em>mates with my urban language expertise. I also got great help from several former university mates from France and Morocco who were more than willing to explain the subtleties of certain terms and the overall meaning of expressions. In fact, I find this kind of help <\/em>to be invaluable<\/em> whenever<\/em> one <\/em>must<\/em> deal with rather sensitive texts that are going to have a wide visibility.<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Terms, abbreviations and expressions<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Once I had made sure I <\/em>had<\/em>n<\/em>\u2019<\/em>t miss<\/em>ed<\/em> any term<\/em>s<\/em>, abbreviation<\/em>s<\/em> or expression<\/em>s<\/em>, I sent the file containing the<\/em>specialised translation<\/em><\/strong>to the Project Manager. Then the file was sent to the proofreading department, where my translation was double-checked to ensure it was terminologically consistent, error-free and complete.<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

All the jobs I receive from<\/em>Swiss Solutions<\/em><\/strong>are interesting<\/em>,<\/em> and many are a challenge<\/em>,<\/em> but I have <\/em>fond memories<\/em> of this job<\/em>\u2014<\/em>it required more of my creativity than others and reminded me<\/em> of<\/em> how rich our language is, while opening my eyes to the complexity and creativity one can notice in any spoken language.<\/em><\/p>\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
